Crazy Travel Week!!

We had a crazy travel week; it started out Tuesday when the missionaries from the Black Sea area traveled to L'viv for a multi zone conference and to meet our new mission president, President Jorg Klebingat and his family.

Wow President has an amazing family. They all speak English perfectly! In the morning when we first got to L'viv it was raining and the rain. We were at the church by 8:30 a.m. the meeting started at 10:00. Ten minutes before 10 President walked in with his family. The first two hours of the meeting was just a get to know you and we were able to ask him any questions we wanted. He has a crazy story about how he met his wife. He is from Germany and was going to Rick's college. He was taking Russian at the time because he prayed about it and he felt really strongly that he should take Russian. For an extra credit assignment he was suppose to go meet this traveling jazz band from Riga, Latvia. The members of the band were from all over Eastern Europe, but his wife is from Latvia. After the concert he went to meet the people from the band, his wife was the group’s translator. President asked her to ice cream and they went. The next day the group was performing to BYU Provo so she was gone. He had her contact information and told her that he was going to come to Provo and that he wanted to go out on a date again which he did. The group was only at BYU for one day and then they were off to New York. She was gone again. He called her in New York and she said it would be great if he could come see her again before she left the States and went back home. So President sold his Camaro took the money and bought an air plane ticket and gave all of the money remaining to his roommate who was behind on rent. He went to New York bought a cheap ring, $12 and purposed to her. He only knew her for about 3 or 4 days. She left to go back to Latvia and he went back to BYU. Later they got married in Germany. President is great and he has high expectations for the mission and the work. He wants us to work through the members a lot more which I think is great! I am so happy about that. It has been something that we have been doing in my area and it has been a slow process but it is starting to show results.

L'viv was nice but it was raining so we didn’t get the chance to see too much of the city.

Church in L'viv
Train Station in L'viv

From L'viv we traveled to Kyiv, for some reason we were not able to get a train back to Odessa from L'viv so we took an overnight train from L'viv to Kyiv. Since we were going to be in Kyiv we changed our P-day from Monday to Wednesday and we were able to spend all day exploring the sights in Kyiv. I went to a few places that are famous that I never saw when I was in Kyiv the first time. We went to the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra (Kiev Cave Monastery) which is a big church in Kyiv.

After that we went to this place that all missionaries call Big Mommy. Actually it is The National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War (of 1941-1945). It is one of the largest museums in Ukraine (over 300 thousand exhibits) centered around the famous 62-meter tall Motherland statue, which is one of the best recognized landmarks of Kiev.

We ended the day with a temple session. It was great and a perfect way to end the day in Kyiv. I love Kyiv. The next day our train got into Odessa at 6:10am.
